The development of a new nanomaterial incorporated in a biodegradable polymeric matrix, brings as a new
perspective to active packaging materials to the food conservation, extending the products shelf life. In this
work, poly (oxyethylene) (PEO) films containing biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were developed
using Acca sellowiana extract, and the antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the films were evaluated
to the production of a new food packaging. Green AgNPs were synthetized using 1 mL of AgNO3 0.5 mmol/L
and 25 mL of macerated extract (1:10, w/v) of Acca sellowiana leaves. Green AgNPs were analyzed by UVVis and TEM analysis. After this, nanocomposite packaging was prepared with 6 g of PEO, mixed with 14
mL of Acca sellowiana Ag-extracts (MA-AgNPs-film) and without silver nanoparticles (MA-film). A control
film was also prepared just with PEO (PEO-control). The solution was placed in petri dishes and oven dried
at 35° C for 3 days. Total Phenolic Compounds (TPC, mg GAE/g), antioxidant capacity by DPPH assay (mg
TEAC/g), and antimicrobial activity (well-diffusion) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus Aureus was
determined in the nanocomposite packaging produced. The results demonstrate a non-significant difference
to the phenolic content to MA-film (21.76 ± 1.80 mg GAE/g) and MA-AgNPs-film (19.61 ± 2.00 mg GAE/g).
However, MA-film presented a higher (p0.05) antioxidant capacity by DPPH assay (44.69 ± 1.05 mg TEAC/g).
Films containing silver nanoparticles (MA-AgNPs-film) presented antimicrobial activity against Escherichia
coli (5.33 ± 1.57 mm) and Staphylococcus Aureus (4.33 ± 0.57 mm), demonstrating that silver nanoparticles
present antimicrobial activity. Thus, in the current work we developed a bioactive and antimicrobial packaging
containing silver nanoparticles, with high potential to food application. MenosThe development of a new nanomaterial incorporated in a biodegradable polymeric matrix, brings as a new
